PON (Passive Optical Network) Solution by softel

A typical PON system consists of a local OLT (Optical Line Terminal), a user-side ONU (Optical Network Unit), and an ODN (Optical Distribution Network). "Passive" means that the ODN does not contain any active electronics and electronic power supplies, and is all split by optical fiber and optics and other passive optical devices.

PON technology advantages

1. High speed and bandwidth support multi-service convergence.

Meet the large bandwidth requirements of EPON, GPON, 10G EPON, and XGS-PON.

Through time-division multiplexing (TDM), wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and other technologies, voice (such as IP telephony), data (broadband Internet access), cable TV/IPTV and other services are integrated to achieve "triple play".

2. Construction and maintenance costs are greatly reduced.

Multiple users share a backbone optical fiber and central office optical module, which greatly reduces the amount of optical fiber layed. PON network deploys more passive electronic devices.

It avoids the power consumption, heat dissipation demand and regular maintenance of active equipment, reduces operating costs, and at the same time has high reliability of passive components, low failure probability and less maintenance workload.

3.The PON network topology is flexible and adapts to diverse scenarios and has a wide coverage.
The backbone fiber extends from the central office (OLT, optical line terminal) to the splitter, and then connects the user (ONU/ONT, optical network unit/terminal) through the branch fiber, which is simple and easy to expand and upgrade. It is suitable for the distribution of users with different densities such as residential quarters, commercial buildings, and rural areas, and can flexibly adapt to the number of access users by adjusting the optical splitting ratio (such as 1:16 and 1:64).

Common PON technologies (e.g., EPON, GPON) have a coverage radius of up to 20 km, which can be further expanded through auxiliary devices such as optical amplifiers to meet the access needs of remote areas or dispersed users.
