What Is Gepon?

What is Gepon?
Does Gepon belong to GPON or EPON?
Does gepon mean 10g epon?

I believe that many beginners will have these questions, and the following is a detailed answer from Gepon.

GEPON (Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network) is an optical fiber communication technology based on the Ethernet standard and using optical fiber as the data transmission medium, which combines the characteristics of Ethernet and PON (Passive Optical Network). Provides high-speed data transmission capabilities on passive optical networks to provide high-speed Internet access, voice and video services, and more to residential and commercial customers.

GEPON is not 10G EPON, but GEPON belongs to EPON.
Both GEPON and EPON are based on the IEEE 802.3ah standard, 10G EPON is based on the IEEE802.3av standard, and GPON is based on the ITU-T G.984 standard.
GEPON's rate is typically 1Gbps symmetrical uplink and downlink. Whereas, 10G EPON is an upgraded version of EPON technology that supports higher speeds, including asymmetric mode (10G rate downlink and 1G rate uplink) and symmetric mode (both uplink and downlink rates of 10G).

Summary

GEPON belongs to EPON, not GPON.
GEPON is not 10G EPON, which is a higher bandwidth EPON technology.

In addition, there are many beginners who understand GEPON as a combination of GPON and EPON, but in fact there is another word "XPON" that defines it. GEPON cannot simply be called a combination of GPON and EPON.
