WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is the core transmission solution in the field of optical communications, which can significantly reduce the cost per bit, maximize fiber utilization, and simplify the network architecture by multiplexing optical signals of different wavelengths into a single fiber to greatly increase transmission capacity. With the explosion of 5G bearer network, data center interconnection (DCI) and backbone network upgrade demand, CWDM/DWDM systems continue to develop in the direction of higher speed (1.6T), higher density (more than 192 wavelengths) and flexible grid (Flex-Grid), especially L-band expansion and silicon photonics integration technology have become the focus of competition. WDM supports the high-bandwidth requirements of all scenarios from submarine optical cables to edge access, and is the underlying enabling technology for low-latency and high-bandwidth services such as cloud computing, 4K/8K video, and the metaverse, and promotes the evolution of optical networks to a next-generation architecture that is all-optical, intelligent, and open and decoupled.
